The Killing Joke
( The following story is based on the monologue the “Killing Joke”. This is my attempt to mix my style of writing with my favorite characters. Any feedback ( good or bad) it’s appreciated )
The Killing Joke
INT. GOTHAM CITY SEWERS
Darkness, we hear distant SLAMMINGS, and hoarse shouts; faint sounds of struggling and despair. “Please Stop”, a voice wails in horror. Another voices shouts a blood churning laughter,“ that creates a sound that echoes through the sewer like a shock wave that rattles everything on its way. A Thunder pounds distance and all the sounds dissipate A grim silence follows leading the way to underground sounds, these sounds reveal the grimness of this underground passage way; small water drops leaking into a moat of murky waters, meek squealing of wondering rodents; perhaps dozens of them, and the crackling sound of creeping bugs, as they lazily pumps their wings as they feast on putrid rodent carcasses.
A thunder pounds, and we see grided shaft of light coming in from the street above beaming into the darkness. The flash reveals the cavernous and creepy depth of this passage way, it also reveals a caped-black -shadow scurrying in the dark; always hiding in the shadows. Through a succession of flashes we see more than just a scurrying shadow, we see the caped-shadow’s face hiding under a scowl, his menacing features with the likes of a Gothic mythical creature, or a giant bat: Two pointy ears standing erect from his scowl, his massive chest covered with an armor, and his long ass cape that widens up like giant bat wings. He resembles a medieval knight. He could be called the Dark Night, the man-bat, or perhaps some may call him: The Batman.
We register another thunder, and a shaft of light reveals him facing the end of the passage way; he stands in front of a underground bunker. He enters, as he enters our eyes begin to register small beads of glimmering light-bulbs. In front of him, he sees a dangling sign “Welcome”, he yields to it; this could be a trap. He goes past the swaying sign, and then he goes through a small brick-walled passage -that leads to a wider room. The lighting, though dim, is incandescent and it comes from small naked bulbs which give the room a creepy look as they whir in an uneven cadence. Perhaps they are being powered by a dying battery, or faulty electric power line. WIDE As The Batman enters the room, we can tell that this place was a WORLD WAR II underground storage facility, or maybe a bunker, and what’s left behind was simply old decorations that range from old WORLD WAR II propaganda posters to pin up girls, old furniture, and rubble. As we close on each image we see that each one of these images shares an interesting detail: they all have clown faces jotted on them, their red lips, unnatural wide smiles and perforated eyes gives each image a GHOULISH look. In the background we hear the upcut sound of a 1920’s French singer coming from a scratched VICTROLA Spinning record. We hear, a blood churning scream, followed by echoic sobs of a man crying and the laughing again. The Batman enters the room, an over-head bulb that hangs in the center of the room illuminates the room, underneath it we see a man sitting on a chair. He is back facing us, his body begins to convulse, and then he bursts into inhuman wailing laughter. Batman eyes narrow. This is too familiar, he is on a mission, he must act soon, he jumps from the shadows, and strides towards the chair. He tackles the man on the chair, his eyes widen as he hesitates, Who is this man? The man’s face covered in sweaty white make up, his teeth clenched in an unnatural smile, which is created by a mesh of wires stitched to the man’s skin. Each one of the stitches is pulling the edges of the man’s mouth, forcing him to display a wide creepy smile, that bares all his bloody teeth. Two tears run down from the man’s face, as he sees the Batman. The Batman eyes widen as he sees the face of the man in front of him, “ JIM?”.
The Batman soon realizes that Jim Gordon is laced to the chair, he takes his Bat-knife and slashes the thick rope that binds Gordon, as he finish with the last rope Batman injects Gordon with a relaxer that enfeebles Gordon. Gordon passes out; we see two green STEEL BALL-BEARINGS falling from his hand, and hitting the ground. PHOOFF PHOFFFF!!! Two swerves green gas clouds engulfs the entire room, turning it into a toxic chamber, The Batman tries to flee, but his body collapses, he is out.
SOUND ONLY: Upcut sound of a 1920’s French singer coming from a scratched spinning Victrola record.
FADE IN, ON VICTROLA, we see a spinning record, we hear the rustling of footsteps, and we see two hands lift the needle, the music stops, but the record continues spinning,…. The shadow moves away..
WIDE: We are in room, and from the darkness, we hear the ECHO slapping footsteps… someone is coming but it’s taking his ass sweet time…. POV: We see a rocking blur image of the room, as everything becomes clearer we realize that we are hanging up side down. From the darkness on the room we a silhouette walking in to the room, from the shadows, it’s a man, probably late 20’s early 30’s, half shaved head with stitches, a GHOULISH clown face, covered with sweaty make up, dark sunken eyes, and fresh bloody scars,( He also has the wires stitched to his mouth) and with an affectionate smile as he welcomes his guest..
ON BATMAN: His eyes squint from behind the mask. “I see you got the free ticket that I sent you, I am glad.”
BATMAN’s eyes squint
BATMAN’s POV, we see the JOKER smiling, still holding his calm, his countenance revealing a regard look on his face that approaches pity.
“ I so wanted you to be here” “ You see, it doesn’t matter if you catch me and send me back to the Asylum.”
ON JOKER
He jumps, and yanks Gordon the hair and Ground, and begins to shake him like a puppet rag doll.
“Gordon’s driven mad”.
“I’ve proved my point. I’ve demonstrated that there’s no difference between me and everyone else!”
ON GORDON,
He eyes sheds a tear, his in pain. The Joker lets go of Gordon, and Gordon hits the ground.
ON GORDON, his GHOULISH clown face against the ground, we see another tear from his eyes, his jaw shaking.. This man is in pain, from his angle we see the JOKER walk to BATMAN, and now we can see that BATMAN is hanging upside down from the ceiling…
“All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy! That’s how far the world is from where I am, just one bad day.”
BATMAN squints in anger, but he keep his calm. He could kill with his eyes.
ON JOKER
He walks to Batman and bents down to talk to Batman to his face, with a toying expression, and the childish smile. He points at the BATMAN, and proceeds,
“You had a bad day once, am I right? ”
“I know I am.”
The Joker grabs THE BATMAN, and begins to twist his hanging body clockwise…
“Why else would you dress up like a flying rat? You had a bad day, and it drove you as crazy as everybody else”
“Only, you won’t admit it. “
Wide: The Joker lets go of the Batman, and the sits down on the ground with his legs crossed. The Batman begins to spin; the Batman becomes a whirling caped-shadow…
“You have to keep pretending that life makes sense! That there’s some point to all this struggling! God! You make me want to puke!”
The BATMAN stops spinning, and now his body begins to sway back and forth in front of the JOKER.
The Joker quickly jumps from the ground, and we hear a metallic rustling sounds. and we hear the Joker talking in the distance” I mean, what is it with you?!”
We hear a screeching sound of rolling wheels. We see the JOKER coming back to the light. He is pushing an old Mobil surgical bed. …and parks underneath the Batman.
“What made you what you are? Girlfriend killed by the mob, maybe? Brother carved up by some mugger?”… ”
“Something like that, I bet. Something like that. ”
The JOKER winks at the Batman and proceeds talking,
“Something like that happened to me, you know. I’m not exactly sure what it was. Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another. If I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice! (Laughs) ”
He walks away and we hear clutter, this time we see him pushing mobile tray cluttered with a mix of surgical tools and torturing gadgets….
ON THE JOKER.. “My point is: I went crazy…”. We see him now dressed up in a doctor’s bathrobe, and a gruesome smile. On his neck we see a Surgical mask. From the tray he begins grabs a rubber glove, stretches it and puts it on. “When I saw what a black, awful joke the world was, I went crazy as a coot! “(Laughs)
We focus on the glove, and he put the wrong glove… He takes the glove off..
“I admit it! Why can’t you? I mean, you’re not unintelligent! You must see the reality of the situation! ”
ON ROPE, we see the JOKER walk to the rope, Do you know how many times we’ve come close to World War III over a flock of geese on a computer screen?”
We hear, the sound of a rusted spinning wheel, and the we reveal the JOKER pulling the rope that leads to BATMAN, he pushes a lever and THE BATMAN falls on the mobile bed.. THE BATMAN squirms on the bed, but is all futile as he is bound with heavy ropes. THE JOKER walks to the tray and we see him putting some thread on a a Stitching needle.
“Do you know what TRIGGERED the last World War? An argument over how many telegraph poles Germany owed its War Department creditors! ”
“Telegraph poles! (Laughs)”.. The JOKER pushes the tray next to the bed.
“It’s all a joke! Everything everybody ever valued or struggled for, it’s all a monstrous, demented gag.”
BATMAN’s POV, The Joker with a genuine smile, and love in his eyes, as he takes a look at the sharp Stitching needle.
“So, why can’t you see the funny side? Why aren’t you laughing?”
